This is a log of sailing activities aboard Daisy II, a 22ft Drascombe Coaster No.280.
Formerly named Aquarius, she was built in July 1997 by Honnor Marine(UK) Ltd of Totnes, Devon. The original Daisy, a Devon Lugger, was purchased in 2005 following an unexpectedly early opportunity to realise a mid-life crisis! Daisy II, with cabin, afforded more scope for overnight stops, and was purchased at the end of 2006.
For several seasons she was moored at Pin Mill on the River Orwell, Suffolk. More recently, the trailer sailing option, utilising a versatile ‘roller coaster’ road trailer, has extended the sailing range. Over the years, we have sailed from various locations off the south coast from Cornwall to Hampshire, a number of inland reservoirs and the Norfolk Broads. However, her key stamping ground is the east coast, usually based around the Harwich area and reaching destinations ranging from North Kent up to Southwold, whilst also launching on the North Norfolk coast at Wells next the Sea. Most recently, a trip from Harwich to Whitby has served only further to whet the appetite: perhaps, one day, Daisy II might complete her journey, in small stages of course, around the UK!

Just found your blog and realise I am going to be moored 3 or 4 boats upstream of you!
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing you out on the river
David
That's great, David. Perhaps you could let me know the name of your boat so I can look out for you.
ReplyDeleteLaunching this year is currently delayed due to some rigging repairs. I should be launching next weekend, weather permitting.
The boat is a leisure 17 called Perfect Pitch, it is currently in Aldebrough I hope to be sailing it round to her new home in Mid May.
ReplyDeleteSee you in Pin Mill!
p.s. I note you were up that way lastr season, any advice for leaving the Ore entrance in a small boat?
D.
Hi David
ReplyDeleteI'll look out for you! In mid-May, I'll be spending a weekend sailing on Rutland Water, so Daisy II will be missing in action! But she'll be back later in the month.
I last negotiated the entrance to the Ore three seasons ago. I presume you are well acquainted with the website: http://www.eastcoastrivers.com/ since this provides up-to-date charts for this - absolutely vital you download the latest. Fortunately, in a shoal draft boat, we don't have to be quite so careful as some - but the entrance isn't something to be undertaken lightly. I'd much recommend you study the chart. The other thing that might work, if this is your first time, is to wait for and follow someone else. The first time I went in, I watched two boats exiting the Ore and observed their track before going in - even from the charts, things can be deceptive. I notice, on the current charts, that the recommended route is quite different from the one they were showing three years back. This area can change quite dramatically even after just one storm.
Lastly, I'd be especially careful and possibly wouldn't even risk it in an easterly. But, then, that's just me! However, it is an adventure, and I passed each way without any issues at all.
